How supervision keeps night-shift guards sharp

Why 2 AM is when posts go quiet, what real supervision looks like at a warehouse, and what to ask your security company.

Most problems with security officers aren't really about the officer. They're about a post nobody checks. Eight quiet hours, the same fence line, nobody coming by: attention slips, rounds get shorter, the phone comes out.

Supervision is what keeps that from happening. Here's what it should look like at a warehouse, and how to tell whether your site has it.

Why night shifts drift.

  • Long, quiet hours. Eight hours with little traffic is hard on anyone's attention.
  • The same route every night. Rounds get shorter when they feel routine.
  • Nobody coming by. A post nobody checks slowly turns into a place to wait out the shift.
  • No feedback. An officer who never hears what went right or wrong has no reason to change.
  • Small slips become habits. A skipped round on Monday is the normal round by Friday.

What real supervision looks like.

  • Visits at unpredictable times. No schedule an officer can plan around, including nights and weekends.
  • Checked against your post orders. The supervisor knows your gate, your docks and your carriers, and checks the post against them.
  • A record you can see. When the visit happened, who was on post, what was found and what was fixed.
  • Corrections on the spot. A problem found at 2 AM is fixed at 2 AM, not discussed next week.
  • Feedback both ways. Your team tells the supervisor what they see, and it shows up on the post.
  • Someone you can call. A supervisor, and the owner, who answer when something's wrong.

What a warehouse client noticed.

“The supervisor stops in several times and ensures the guards are always attentive to our needs and work with the command post directions.”

Is your site actually supervised?

Five questions. Answer each one.

  • 01 Do you know who supervises the officers on your site, by name?

  • 02 Can you see when the supervisor last visited?

  • 03 Do visits happen at different times, including nights and weekends?

  • 04 Does someone check the post against your post orders?

  • 05 Do you hear back when something was corrected?

Answer the five questions.

What to ask before you sign.

  • Who supervises my site? You want a name, not “our team.”
  • When do they visit? The answer should include nights and weekends, at times the officer can't predict.
  • Can I see every visit? If visits aren't on record, you can't tell whether they happened.
  • What happens when they find a problem? Fixed on the spot, written up, and you hear about it.
  • Who do I call at 2 AM? Someone who can change things that night, ideally the owner.

Questions managers ask.

How often should a security supervisor visit a site?

Often enough that officers never know when the next visit is coming, including nights and weekends. The right number depends on your posts and hours. What matters most is that visits are unpredictable and on record.

What does a security supervisor check?

That the officer is on post and alert, the post orders are being followed, rounds are happening, the log is up to date, and anything found is fixed or reported.

What should I do if a guard is asleep or off post?

Report it to the company right away and ask what they're changing: the officer, the supervision, or both. Ask for the answer in writing.

How do I give feedback about an officer?

Tell the supervisor or the owner directly. A good company wants it, and your feedback should show up in what changes on the post.
